Erik Larsen, formerly with Arnold Palmer Golf, has planned a new 6,815-yard, par 71 championship course. Larsen is immediate past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and is excited about adding Atlantic Beach Country Club to the list of high-profile courses on his resume.

The Selva Marina Country Club golf course opened in 1958. The A.W. Tillinghast and Donald Ross-inspired course featured elevated greens and wide fairways when it opened and hosted the Greater Jacksonville Open, which later became The PLAYERS Championship. A plaque commemorating Jack Nicklaus’ only double eagle on the PGA Tour remains on the spot the “Golden Bear” hit his second shot on the par 5, 501-yard 18th hole during the 1966 Greater Jacksonville Open.

Construction of the golf course will begin later this year, following the demolition of the existing clubhouse, tennis courts and pool. The clubhouse’s and course’s grand reopening are scheduled for October 2014.
